General Discussion / Re: Infinite lives are too lame?

Maybe just a death penalty for the level itself.

Every death reduces your stats by 10%. Every kill you make removes 1% of death penalty. Upon successful completion of the level or upon aborting, the remaining death penalty is removed.

What character (type and level) were you using in the windows version?

Mage level 1. In the first quest.

Two things:

1) For the windows version, the turning speed of the player is crazily fast.

2) For old DOS version, if I make a new mage and shoot an elf archer with a mage spell (456) and instakill him, I get 700XP. If I stab him to death with the starter dagger, I get ~1000XP. Why such a big difference?

Hints, Cheats, Tips & walkthroughs / Re: HP/MP/Stats on Level
« on: September 22, 2013, 03:00:28 AM »
Oh, but archers get to start with an accuracy of 35, one of the highest stats in the game.  Accuracy is used in determining critical damage.

Yes but as a result they probably have lower stats elsewhere. Unless they have more total stats, they could really need a boost, just compare them to knight or sailor...

Bonus to range damage and/or a speed boost (to run away faster) would be great.

Thanks for the list though, it really made me rethink what would be the optimal class for me to play. I like mana regen but currently play warlock/paladin. Probably start up a priest! Medium armor and 200 mana regen, yummmmm.

And while I'm at it ... your health and mana regeneration increases as your level goes up.  It's not much but it helps keep you from thinking regen and mana are totally useless.  Regen health is set to (Constitution * (Character level + 5))/8.  Regen mana is set to (Magic * (Level + 5))/4.  Magician and warlocks get a 50% bonus to mana regen (effectively 1.5x).  Priest and mage regen mana at 3x the rate (yes, 3x!).

Wow nice, the game design does have more depth than I thought originally. I always thought the mage and priest were kinda useless compared to warlock and paladin, but mana regen is not displayed anywhere. So they do have a serious advantage to make up for their crappy armor after all!

Just wondering, is there a hidden advantage for martial classes with low armor?

And how does regen from magic items get calculated into this? Is it subject to the class regeneratin bonus as well? Because I think the effects of those items isn't really very big (on my warlock).

General Discussion / Top 5 Scariest AA stuff
« on: August 28, 2013, 03:02:10 PM »
I just remember how this game traumatized me as a kid by the horrible scary stuff it has at some points! So here's my top 5.

1)  Being scared shitless by that mofo warlock on top of the wall shooting those creepy scary skullface homing missiles that would come after me and make that horrible, horrible scary sound!
And FINALLY after many weeks of playing finding a way to get up the wall and killing the son of a bitch that terrorized me for so long!

2) Holy shit, stone ball rolling down the corridor, noes! *Runs away* *BAM floor collapses* *ends up in a pit full of skeletons*

3) Opening that damn door with the lever in the underground part behind the waterfall in Elmore's Retreat I think (not sure which mission) and having that freaking Gargoyle standing right on the other side. *HISSSSS!*

4) I farmed the first map of Destruction extensively and there are those wraiths in the castle. One of them is in an apparantly dead-end room. So I was doing that map as usual, entered that room to kill the wraith, but it wasn't there. So I thought whatever, and continued. After I walked down the corridor further, suddenly the sucker was right behind me. *HISSSSSS!* I realized later that that 'room' was actually a shaft and that the critter must have flown upwards a bit, where I couldn't see it, and came down again as soon as I opened the door, and pursued me! Evil game!

5) Temple of Astarte wraith room teleport after trying to steal the treasure. Surviving and then getting blasted from afar by the evil wizard himself.

General Discussion / So, I actually tried to buy this game
« on: August 28, 2013, 02:32:43 PM »
Back in the old days I got a shareware version of this game and eventually started nagging my parents to buy it.

But they said it was way too expensive and I should try to get it at a computer fair like I did with all other games (back in those days, it was actually possible to get 50% discount on new games at those fairs, I got warcraft 2 for the equivalent of $20 a few weeks after release!).

Of course, I never saw this game at the fair or the shop, so after a year of trying to get it, I started nagging my parents again.

They decided to send a letter asking if the game had a discount since it was somewhat old now and $44.95 was way too expensive for us. But the letter never got there. We saw 'Athens' in the address, and us living in Europe and only knowing one Athens, sent the letter to Greece. Since we never got a reply, nor could we get the phone number to work, my parents declared that the devs were scammers that would just steal our money and would never give us the full game anyway. :(

I've always thought the game was made in Greece until now.

General Discussion / Re: Your first experience with Amulets and Armor
« on: August 28, 2013, 01:10:40 PM »
I started playing the shareware edition back in '97, it was on a CD I borrowed from a friend. It only had 3 or 4 maps I think. It was nice because if I'd quit, it would not reset the level but instead let me keep all the stuff I looted. So I farmed the first map (attack on the castle) a lot for XP and iron armor until I was of high enough level to take on the later maps.

Over time I used Norton Commander to hack the save games and create my own items. It was actually possible to change the spell effects on wands and rings by editing the save games! I made myself a ring of flying and a wand that would shoot that yellow mortar spark effect high into the air, which would instakill everything in a radius upon landing. And then slaughtered everything in the castle repeatedly, hehehe.

Somewhere along the way I picked up the full version from an abandonware site, I didn't like it that much as the initial maps weren't so cool and the shop didn't have all the interesting stuff that the shareware version had.

Last year I started playing again and I now have a nice warlock at 20 and also a paladin, knigth and mercenary. :)

VERY HAPPY to see that this game is getting a comeback! I love all games that have RPG elements integrated into another game genre!
