Shield stat

How exactly does the Shield statistic work?

I took off all armor and shield rings and went up to a Death Knight in the first map of the last quest. He kept doing 7 damage to me per hit.

Then I put on my shield rings and cast the shield spells, getting a 90% Total on the equipment screen, and he would do 3-4 damage to me.

Not quite what I was expecting...
You say "potion of food". I say "yoghurt".

Shield is supposed to make the lowest armor calculation for any body part increase. Effectively it replaces your armor percentage. However there are a lot of factors. Shield is probably not effective against armor piercing (I don't remember the code well enough off hand) but it doesn't incur the lightning bonus on its own (you need platemail or chain for that). There are a lot of factors but I've noticed that there is unexpected behavior and some investigation into the codebase is a good idea.

I really want to experiment with it and make it only block magical damage.

I should point out that leather armor doesn't have any helmets and it always brings to possible total armor down. Shield can easily bridge the gap.
