I started playing the shareware edition back in '97, it was on a CD I borrowed from a friend. It only had 3 or 4 maps I think. It was nice because if I'd quit, it would not reset the level but instead let me keep all the stuff I looted. So I farmed the first map (attack on the castle) a lot for XP and iron armor until I was of high enough level to take on the later maps.
Over time I used Norton Commander to hack the save games and create my own items. It was actually possible to change the spell effects on wands and rings by editing the save games! I made myself a ring of flying and a wand that would shoot that yellow mortar spark effect high into the air, which would instakill everything in a radius upon landing. And then slaughtered everything in the castle repeatedly, hehehe.
Somewhere along the way I picked up the full version from an abandonware site, I didn't like it that much as the initial maps weren't so cool and the shop didn't have all the interesting stuff that the shareware version had.
Last year I started playing again and I now have a nice warlock at 20 and also a paladin, knigth and mercenary.

VERY HAPPY to see that this game is getting a comeback! I love all games that have RPG elements integrated into another game genre!
