Your first experience with Amulets and Armor
« on: June 19, 2011, 02:24:25 PM »
What was it like? how did it go? What did you think about the game at first?

As for me? I was a little confused as to what did what. I saw all these options, items, etc. Got a little confused at first, then when it got to combat even more so. Remember my first experience with the Mage. accidently dropped my knife and started punching the elfs (had no idea how to do magic at the time :P ). needless to say once I got things figured out, and found out all the cool little concepts of the game like how the runes work, that you need food and water as well, it started to become really awesome.

I remember trying most of the classes at first, but I think I liked the mercenary the most at the time. I also remember it being very difficult yet fun.

Yeah, coming right of of playing a'lot of fps at the time my first experience was a little difficult as I had not played a game like this in a long time. but once you start learning everything is surprisingly fun.

Several years ago (like 8) I was browsing the Underdogs looking for interesting abandonware, and I happened upon A&A. I was dubious at first but found it surprisingly fun. Never got around to beating every mission, but every couple years I play it for a bit.

I got the demo out of a magazine, and I played it through half a dozen times at least... I thought the game was great.  I was still young and hadn't bought any PC software yet (not that I could've likely found this one anyway).

I rocked a priest, then a mercenary.

It was one of the first real RPGs I'd played.  I had a SNES at the time, but as a kid I was more interested in arcade and action games.  It's probably the main reason I like it so much, despite not being a particularly noteworthy example.  It was also my first DOOM engine game (except for brief games of DOOM at my friend's house on his dad's PC).

Ah, youth.

I started playing the shareware edition back in '97, it was on a CD I borrowed from a friend. It only had 3 or 4 maps I think. It was nice because if I'd quit, it would not reset the level but instead let me keep all the stuff I looted. So I farmed the first map (attack on the castle) a lot for XP and iron armor until I was of high enough level to take on the later maps.

Over time I used Norton Commander to hack the save games and create my own items. It was actually possible to change the spell effects on wands and rings by editing the save games! I made myself a ring of flying and a wand that would shoot that yellow mortar spark effect high into the air, which would instakill everything in a radius upon landing. And then slaughtered everything in the castle repeatedly, hehehe.

Somewhere along the way I picked up the full version from an abandonware site, I didn't like it that much as the initial maps weren't so cool and the shop didn't have all the interesting stuff that the shareware version had.

Last year I started playing again and I now have a nice warlock at 20 and also a paladin, knigth and mercenary. :)

VERY HAPPY to see that this game is getting a comeback! I love all games that have RPG elements integrated into another game genre!

My first experience was in 1997 via PC Gamer. I would steal the CDs out of the magazine and try all the games contained.

I got addicted to A&A, and decided to spend money to get the rest of the game. I played through with a knight (I think) and I would haul all the best loot to the end of each level to bring it back to the inn and sell to buy the next great weapon. I'd be at maximum encumbrance once I cleared each level.

So yup, I had the original CD. It was super basic, nothing to write home about, but I liked the game, and it got really difficult and put the fear of death in me. I think the sound was probably my favorite part, very spooky hooded monks is the thing I remember.

The only other games I bought back then were Escape Velocity and Diablo.

Tesseracter, that's pretty high praise.  I would not be surprised if you played through as a Knight as that was one of our level editor's favorite class.  And as you well know, many played the demo, but few had the CD.

It would be awesome if he still had the CD. It would be the only known copy in existence, wouldn't it?

Knight is my favorite class as well. It's a tank.

Without checking the credits... does the original level editor ever hang around the community? I'd love to ask some questions about tools, and challenges, and some of the motivations for levels.

I remember playing the shareware on a PC Gamer disc back in the day... It may have been a few years after its' release since my cousin always had heaps of old PC Gamer discs kicking around. He used to come to the house and install demos on my computer which introduced me to very violent and mature games that I would not have had access to otherwise... lol! Those were the days! I remember finding A&A on there and really digging it. I think the highlight of the experience was snagging the mithril armor while dodging that infamous boulder. For some reason the green armor and the fact that it was better loot than what I had made it worthwhile for me. I think I did play that demo all the way through, and was left wanting more. Being able to come back to where I had left off all those years ago is awesome, to say the least! I thoroughly enjoy this game to this day.
