A&A windows won't work.
« on: September 28, 2013, 10:16:02 AM »
I am on 64 Bit Windows 7 ultimate. I install the game fine but, when i try to run it, it tells me that it can't open the file because it does not know what program to use. I imagine that i need the visual c++ thing but that won't install :/ takes ages to get going and then never actually works.

Sowhatamisupposedtodo? (insert spaces where appropriate.... I have a terrible sense of humour...sorry....)

Lango,

Sorry to hear the installer did not work correctly for you.  Can you try opening C:\Games\Amulets & Armor\ and running AA.exe?  If it has an error when you do that, please type the error here word for word and we will see what we can do to fix it.

I got that error too when I installed (Windows 8 64-bit). IIRC, the shortcuts were linked to an *.frm file, which windows reported it didn't know how to open, but opening AALauncher.exe worked just fine.

While we're mentioning bugs though, I have a couple that have really been annoying me:
Seemingly randomly, about 1/8 times I complete a level, the game crashes. Perhaps related, one time I decided to go back to town during a level, and it crashed as well.

Another annoying bug is switching between keyboard look and mouselook mode by pressing tab. The mouselook view centers on where the mouse is in keyboard look mode. For example, if I'm looking at a druid in mouselook mode, and decide my health is getting too low, I'll press tab to switch to keyboard look, and open the inventory window. If I use a potion, and leave the mouse cursor at the edge of the screen, the view will center on the point where the mouse was when switching back to mouselook, so I'll no longer be facing the druid that was attacking me.

Also, what's the best way to report bugs? I sent another e-mail to your lesink email address, but you didn't reply, so I wasn't sure you got it. Maybe a sub-forum for bugs, and feature requests would be useful?

It was only the shortcut that didn't work. I located it where you said and it works fine :)

But one thing.. DEM CONTROLS .. This game is a lot to take in :/. I loved might and magic 8 so i want to like this game too!.. I can think of a few things that would make the controls better  (maybe they are fine and i am just an idiot)

anyway, the game runs perfectly it seems, so thanks :)

Glad to hear you got it working!  If you have input for controls, feel free to post them.  Also, you may want to press TAB to turn on the mouse look mode + WASD.

Yes, I'm very frustrated with the WiX installer tools.  They almost work perfectly, except they don't.  I'm going to change over to a new installer this next round.

This is odd.  Does this occur after a long play session, or does that matter?

Yes, this is a known bug I'm looking at in the "sooner than later" pile.  My first attempts to fix it didn't work.

I did get your email, so for the no response.  I setup a forum of bug reports here in as it's own forum.  If you want to be a really dedicated tester, I'll let you enter bugs here:  https://www.pivotaltracker.com/s/projects/757959

I hope with the next installer you use, it does a search for a directory named "Games" and suggest that as an install location for Amulets and Armor like the current one does. It's something few installers do anymore, but that I, as a user, appreciate a lot. =) I might be the minority though...

I think the crash when ending a level tends to happen more often when starting the game for the first time than extended play times, but that's just my general feeling of it. I've been opening, closing, windowing->fullscreen, and alt-tabbing so much while working on the wiki, it's hard to keep track. O_o

As far as testing and bugs, I've just been keeping a text file of ideas for feature requests that come to me while playing, and where I record bugs I encounter. I'm not sure how to use the Pivotal Tracker, but if you give me some instruction, I could figure it out and report bugs there, or I could just E-mail/Post to forum/Dev Blog like I've done in the past.
