Problems with IPXnet play
« on: December 23, 2013, 05:41:29 PM »
Hi guys and gals, I'm new here, got here from seeing that LP of the game over on LPArchive. Anyway, I wanted to try the game out with a friend of mine, so we followed the instructions found in the comments of the very first episode of the LP, which are as follows:

"So multiplayer is a two-step process for us. Obviously first step is to get the sucker up and running in dosbox. NEXT step is to set up a (free) server on a tunneling client. We use hamachi 'cause it's free. So have one person start the server, and tell their IP address to the other person. That person will enter into dosbox and type in ipxnet connect [IP address]. Once you're both on the same server, don't start "armor.exe", start "setup" and both join a network game. Then you're in!"

My friend and I followed these instructions exactly, and the game started up, saw the company logo, smooth going so far... and then when we got to the menu... this happened.

This happened after I moved the cursor around.

This is just from my end, but my friend said it happened to him as well. What I want to know is, why? Is there any way to fix this? My friend and I have tried other IPX-compatible DOS games, and others work perfectly, all except for this one.

Any help we could get with this matter will be most appreciated. If there's any other info I need to give to help people help me, I gladly will. Thanks in advance!

There are a couple different versions of Amulets and Armor.
1. There is the original Amulets and Armor DOS abandonware version that was used in the Something Awful LP.

2. Then there's the "Classic" amulets and armor version that comes in two variants. A DOS version, and a windows version.
I recommend the windows version.

Download the "Windows Classic" Amulets and Armor release from here:
http://amuletsandarmor.com/download.htm

In the zip there's a game installer, and a MS C++ Redistributable 2013 (Or maybe it was 2012). Either way, install them both.
You may also have to install the MS C++ Redistributable for 2010. (I had to.)

The shortcut the game makes on your desktop is actually broken, so you'll need to browse to its install folder, and run AALauncher.exe. For me, it installed to D:\Games\Amulets and Armor, but you might find it on your C drive instead.

Once you've got the game installed, it's pretty easy to do multiplayer.
1. Run AALauncher.exe
2. Click "Start A&A Server". This will start a host that you and your friend will connect to.
3. You and your friend will both connect by clicking "Play Network Game".
You'll be asked to enter the server IP. If you're playing on a LAN together, give him your computer's IP. If your friend is connecting to you over the internet, you'll need to give him your public IP to connect to. www.whatismyip.com is helpful for this. Connecting over the internet may be problematic do to firewall settings, but hopefully it works.

If want to continue with the DOS Box version, notice the instructions here:  http://wiki.amuletsandarmor.com/index.php?title=DOSBoxConfig

In step 9, there was this note:  "9) Type "Setup.exe >NUL" to run the Amulets and Armor setup program."

The >NUL is needed to get rid of all that extra text.

Were you able to get the game up and running?

Yup, we're playing with the Windows version. Thanks for all the help! Since we've gotten it working now, we'll probably get some more friends of ours to join too. I'm really looking forward to playing this with my friends, so thanks again!  :D
